The following tutorial explain how to install Drupal 6. The requirements for the installation are: a web server, either local or on a hosting, our web server must have php and mysql support. To perform a local installation can be used the XAMPP distribution http://sourceforge.net/projects/xampp/ that automatically install everything you need to have our web server up and running.

Let's get to work, let's start by downloading the latest version of Drupal 6 (http://drupal.org/project/drupal)

Unzip the tar.gz and copy the contents to the root directory of the web page

Using a database manager such as phpMyAdmin create a new database for our installation of drupal.

Find the file sites/default/default.settings.php and make a copy of the file by renaming default.settings.php to settings.php. If we dont do that we will see the following message.



We ensure that the settings.php file permissions allow writing on it. Permisions are automatically changed back to read only once installation is complete, but we should still check that they are properly changed after installation to avoid security problems.

We open our favorite browser and open the url of the root directory of our webpage where we copied the files. For example in our case http://localhost/drupal/

If we added translations for other languages we will see a screen with the option to install in English or wathever language we copied. Select the option of the language you want to intall.



Followed steps we will input the information necessary for installation.

Here we will enter the following: name of the database, the username and password.

The remaining options are usually not required.

We click OK and start the installation process. Once completed we enter the first user account that will be the administration account. An e-mail, username and password will be requested.

Now we will be redirected to the home page of our website.

And that's all, congratulations the installation is complete!
